You may have seen this breed before and thought “Wow! What a big husky!” but the Alaskan Malamute is actually a breed of its own with many of its own unique qualities. Being a very athletic breed they are used to many different activities such as sled pulling, freight hauling and dog agility. Although they are not as fast as their smaller more agile counterparts, the Husky, the Alaskan Malamute’s size is what really sets them apart. The females can be up to 75 pounds and the average weight of males is 85, some have even been known to weigh up to 100 pounds! They also are double-coated dogs, so it is important to keep them cool in the summer time.
A good way to keep their body temperature down is to fill up a kiddie pool with cool water and let them splash away. Here at Fetchers, we have pools for all of our Malamute pals. One of the many dogs that visits here at Fetchers is a giant Malamute named Kingsley. Although his size can make some wary, we don’t discriminate by size and we know that Kingsley is truly a gentle giant. He gets along with all his buddies here at Fetchers Play and Stay and you would almost forget that he towers over all his playmates. Kingsley has a big heart and an even bigger stature and we love him for it!
