Labrador Retrievers are exceptional pets and working animals. They are America’s most popular dog breed. Males ranging from 65-80 pounds and females ranging from 55-70 pounds, these dogs were bred to work. Originally, they were the “Fisherman’s Helper” by hauling nets, fetching ropes, and retrieving fish. Nowadays, Labs are known to work with hunters, retrieving birds and other animals and bringing them to their humans. These dogs are great when it comes to Search and Rescue and living in a home with children. Despite their names, they were originally from Newfoundland, Canada.
Labrador Retrievers coats are very coarse on the outside. They have a double coat to protect them from the icy waters and have webbed toes to help swim. They make great retrieving dogs with their fast pace due to their strong legs and shoulders. The primary colors are Chocolate, Yellow and Black but there are Silver Labs out there too. The oldest lab to live died at the age of 29. Their temperament makes them a top choice for dog owners. When you have one of these wonderful dogs as a pet, regular exercise is of utmost importance. They were bred to work and run so without activity, their quality of health can quickly decrease. If possible, your lab should be given the opportunity to swim. They are great with socialization so a dog park or doggy daycare is a perfect way to keep your fur baby active.
If you are looking to add a Labrador Retriever to your family, it’s best to be prepared for a loving but also a highly active companion. Access to the outdoors even when someone is not home is ideal for them so they have the chance to roam. They are the perfect family dog and will love you unconditionally.
